There’s no denying that Amazon has truly changed the way in which businesses and consumers think. What was once a humble online book store has rapidly developed into an established ecommerce giant and has completely revolutionised the ecommerce industry. 

Although many ecommerce owners don’t have the resources that Amazon possess, there are still a few things even the smallest business can learn from Amazon.

Amazon currently offer one of the best personalised shopping experiences on the internet, offering sections such as ‘related to items you’ve viewed’ ‘inspired by your shopping trends’ and even ‘recommended for you’ in order to provide items consumers might want to both help the customer and possibly increase sales.

Users rely on product reviews to make decisions about their purchases and although many websites do offer this, Amazon does a great job of providing customer reviews in a well thought out manner. 

Having a star system as well as the opportunity for written feedback, gives a clear understanding of what others have thought of the item, giving potential customers the chance to skim over reviews to get an idea with the star system or to get in depth reviews by reading the feedback.  

Offer incentives

One of the best ways to grow your business is to offer incentives to your customers, Amazon did this perfectly with the introduction of Amazon Prime. Creating a premium service for members to receive special deals, quick delivery and video and music streaming services has unlocked the potential for Amazon to branch out into different industries and reach new audiences. 

These incentives not only attract new customers but also mean that existing customers want to stick with the brand even more, creating a loyal customer relationship. 

Recommended products 

Although touched up preciously, recommended products are available not only on the home page but also on a product page. Offering similar products and even the option to bundle products together is an easy way for retailers to increase sales. 

The addition of these recommended products also means that there is some SEO benefit, creating internal links to other pages on the website can be great for SEO and is something Amazon know well.

Be unique

In order to stay ahead you ultimately need to stay unique, Amazon offers services that many other online stores and marketplaces don’t. By studying other companies and twisting what they are doing for your business it means that you are still following an effective business model without directly copying and still staying unique and innovative.
