At Discovery Design we take great pride in trying to do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint and be more eco friendly. In the office, the team puts effort into anything from reusable water bottles to recycling and any other areas we can try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, so we were over the moon to switch to carbon neutral web hosting. 

What is carbon neutral web hosting?

Some people may be unaware of what this is. Web hosting companies basically have data centres which are necessary for housing servers and providing hosting, but they use a huge amount of energy and emit tonnes of CO2 every year. 

Data centres across the world are expected to generate 533 million tonnes of CO2 by 2020. One web hosting company calculated that powering the average website produces 4,500 pounds of CO2 a year, equivalent to driving the average new car for more than 10,000 miles. 

Web hosting companies are now trying to reduce this by using renewable energy and other green power sources that will prevent the emissions from happening in the first place.
